As Plain as the Nose on Your Face: Exploring Forensic Facial Reconstruction by Loren Conroy2/19/2016
Across the world, the concept of “graffiti” often holds a negative reputation within the public sphere. In many minds, it associates itself with delinquency, ugliness, and crumbling infrastructures; images come to mind of teenagers defacing private property to feel ownership or to get a little adrenaline rush from breaking the rules. However, graffiti can accomplish a lot of amazing work in societies that allow it to flourish. Artists are able to portray the essence of local culture through their visions of spray-paint and wheat-paste. Graffiti works to communicate large-scale societal concerns, stress the importance of local community rituals, and/or exemplify the notion that any space can be a canvas for a beautiful piece of artwork. It is a way for people to design the areas in which they spend time. For the Winter Edition of Heterotopia, the editors have decided to present a few of our favorite works of graffiti in order to showcase how these ‘illicit’ forms of art can successfully represent the aesthetic of the local culture.
