At the heart of Heterotopia are the authors whose willingness to share their work and the unique perspective they bring to the discipline of anthropology, allows us to present a window into the rich and dynamic world of anthropology. We take seriously the four field approach to the discipline and encourage submissions from all of the major sub-disciplines, and from those working within all of the tracks and options offered by the University of Washington's anthropology department. In addition to academic papers, essays, and articles, we encourage contributions of non-academic works including, but not limited to, poetry, personal narratives, blog posts, and short stories. In addition we welcome non-literary submissions, such as photographs, drawings, video documentaries, videotaped performance pieces, and music. We strongly believe that doing anthropology consists not only of engaging in formal research but also includes all forms of expression that are representative of viewing the world from an anthropological perspective.

In addition to authors, Herotopia is recruiting peer reviewers, editors, graphic designers, and artists. Peer reviewers commit to reviewing journal submissions and providing constructive insight that assists us in making the decision about what to publish, while also providing authors with valuable input that helps them to strengthen their work. Editors work closely with authors in a collaborative process that sees the author's initial submission evolve into a final piece that fully reflects the author's vision. Artists and designers contribute to the aesthetics of Heterotopia, becoming integral to the visual legacy of the journal by working on web site and graphic design, engaging in art direction for our print edition, and creating promotional materials.
